Consumers After Choice on GM Foods, Not Rejecting GM Foods
Friday, July 28, 2000
Press Release
The Commonwealth Government, like 93 per cent of Australians, supports labelling of GM foods to enable consumers to make an informed choice. "Biotechnology Australia polls consistently show that over 90 per cent of Australians want labelling of GM foods," Patricia Kelly, Head of Biotechnology Australia said today.

"However, a recent Biotechnology Australia survey found that if foods were labelled, 37 per cent of people surveyed said that labels on genetically modified foods would make no change to the type of food they bought and a further nine per cent said they would actively buy GM foods.

"Significantly, the survey found that 65 per cent of all respondents said they would eat genetically modified foods if there was a benefit." Those who said they would not choose to buy GM foods in the phone survey stated safety was their major concern. The Australia New Zealand Food Authority ensures that no GM foods, or any foods, are approved for public consumption unless they meet food safety requirements. The survey was conducted nationwide by Quantum Market.
