Expanding seed production capacity to meet demand Friday, November 7, 2008
DuPont plans to construct a facility in Hermiston, Ore., which will produce parent seed corn and pre-commercial hybrid seed corn.
The expansion is one of many steps DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred is taking to ensure it meets rising demand for Pioneer® brand products and help farmers meet the strong global demand for grain.
DuPont, which recently acquired 40 acres of land in Hermiston, expects initial operation to begin fall 2009 after construction of the facility is completed. The project represents a capital investment of more than USD 15 million.
"This location strengthens our ability to bring new products to the market faster and to help farmers increase their productivity," said Paul Schickler, Pioneer president and DuPont vice president and general manager.
"We anticipate high demand for hybrids with our new Optimum® GAT® trait, which will offer farmers additional unique weed control options. The new Hermiston facility will help ensure that demand is met," Paul said.
Although the business sells corn, soybean, canola, sunflower and sorghum seed in the state, Hermiston is the first facility for Pioneer in Oregon.
