Malta agrees with EU climate and energy package Thursday, October 23, 2008
Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino signalled Malta`s agreement with a climate and energy package, especially the EU aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent during 2020.
That would rise to 30 per cent if international agreement is reached between the EU, developed countries and less developed countries.
The matter was discussed in Luxembourg at a meeting of the Environment Council, when Mr Pullicino emphasised the need of agreement on the package, which would give every European country a role at international level about the challenge of climate change.
Mr Pullicino also referred to genetically modified organisms, seeing the need of a stronger system to study the effects on the environment. He said it should be the company offering genetically modified products on the market which should give an assurance about the safety of GMOs for sensitive geographical regions.
