Genetic Engineering & Biotech News has identified Brazil, China and India as three of the world's leading countries actively engineering the development of key biotech clusters that could rival Boston, San Francisco and San Diego. Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro were ID'd as the three leading emerging biotech clusters in Brazil. Most of that activity is centered on ag bio, though some drug development work is underway.
In Canada, Toronto and Vancouver were cited, though money woes have hampered expansion. And biotech clusters in Shanghai and Beijing have seen rapid growth.
"Shanghai is the new center of business and commerce in China, rivaling Hong Kong," according to Zhu Shen, Ph.D., CEO of BioForesight. And in the next three years India is expected to have 27 biotech parks. GEN also looked at France, Japan, Israel and Singapore, along with a number of U.S. states.
