NM tribe gets funding for biomass project
Friday, June 12, 2009

MESCALERO, N.M. - Southern New Mexico's Mescalero Apache tribe will get $2.5 million in federal stimulus money for a biomass energy development project.

The tribe plans to develop a wood pellet production plant and a 6-megawatt power plant in connection with its sawmill.

Members of the state's congressional delegation announced the funding Thursday.

The delegation says that in addition to creating jobs, the project will help protect the Lincoln National Forest by converting woody biomass that poses a fire risk to a renewable energy resource.
