Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today said the expert committee's decision on the introduction of Bt brinjal will be final and the Centre does not have any say in the issue.

"We don't have any opinion on it. The decisions of the expert committee on the issue is final. The Ministry does not have any say on the issue," Pawar told reporters on the sidelines of state ministers' conference on milk productivity.

Stating that there was a need to examine the impact of Bt brinjal on agriculture and farmers, he said it should be introduced aimed at benefitting the growers.

"We (India) need to experiment on it for some time (before introducing it). It should not have any negative impact on agriculture, farmers and animals," Pawar said.

There was some controversy before the introduction of Bt cotton, Pawar recalled.

Copyright 2010 PTI
