Dr Anjum Ali Butter, Director General, Agricultural Extension and Adaptive Research, Punjab, while addressing a seminar stated that, Bt cotton had immense potential to fight-back various insects, which is why farmers are speedily adopting the same, to improve their productivity and earn more money by selling quality cotton.

Dr Butter was attending a one-day seminar on Economics of Adopting Bt Cotton at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, which was organized by the Department of Environmental and Resource Economics Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology.

More so, Dr Butter also stated that, Pakistan has been producing 13 million bales of cotton and Punjab is the key contributor as it cultivates 6 million acres of land under cotton. Over 2 million acre of cotton crop is cultivated by Farmers of Bahawalpur Division, whereas 1.2 million acres of land is cultivated by farmers of DG Khan Division.

Rising demand for cotton is another reason for farmers of Central Punjab to cultivate cotton instead of rice. Professor Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, UAE, said that, cotton is the most vital part of every human being, as it is used right from a nappy for a just-born child to ‘kafan’ on the death of a human being.

However, Dr Ashfaq did mention his disappointment over adoption of Bt cotton by Pakistani farmers, without any legal protection or regulations designed by the federal or provincial governments.

He also expressed his worry over illicit varieties of Bt cotton, which are being purchased from USA, as these varieties are unable to give the expected results owing to changing ecological and environment conditions.

On the other side, Professor Dr Iqbal Zafar, Dean Faculty of Agri Economic and Rural Sociology pointed out the socio-economic effects of Bt cotton on rural people. He informed that, research should be carried out to spot the social aspects pertaining to adoption of innovative agricultural measures by farmers.

Copyright © 2010.
